Support that complements the classroom
Tutoring works best when it connects with what a student is learning in school while creating space for the review, strategy, and enrichment that can be difficult to fit into a full classroom.
Work directly with the concepts, assignments, and methods a student is seeing in class. Tutoring can align with contemporary curriculum materials, including HMH programs used locally, while keeping the focus on understanding rather than simply completing an assignment.
Find earlier skills that may be making new material harder, or move beyond the immediate curriculum with more challenging problems, stronger connections between topics, and deeper mathematical reasoning.
Build explicit assessment skills alongside content knowledge: interpreting unfamiliar questions, pacing work, deciding when to move on and return, checking efficiently, and communicating reasoning clearly.
My approach
My role is to identify where that difficulty begins and build from there—whether the issue is the current lesson, an earlier skill, problem-solving organization, or confidence in their own reasoning.
Procedures matter, but they become easier to remember when they are connected to an underlying idea. I use questions, varied examples, and guided reasoning so students understand why a method works.
New mathematics builds heavily on what came before it. Individual tutoring gives us the time to find prerequisite gaps and address them directly rather than repeatedly working around them.
As understanding improves, more of the problem-solving process moves back into the student's hands. Whether a student needs reinforcement or greater challenge, the goal is the same: stronger reasoning, confidence, and independence.
Background
I previously worked as a Lead Tutor and Assistant Director at Mathnasium of Stamford, supporting students across a wide range of mathematics levels.
I studied mathematics at New York University, continue my mathematics education at CT State Community College, and currently work in an elementary-school setting.
How tutoring works
Before we begin, I’ll ask about the student's course, recent challenges, goals, and any upcoming assessments.
Sessions can combine current coursework with targeted review, test preparation, or enrichment. Assignments, course materials, and teacher feedback are welcome when they provide useful context.
For ongoing students, I’m also happy to provide parents with brief updates on progress, recurring difficulties, and areas worth reinforcing.
